Alex (she/they) is a vibrant family lawyer and domestic relations mediator who is passionate about serving the LGBTQ+ community and others with pride.
As a member of the community herself, Alex understands the unique challenges that queer families face and provides compassionate, informed, and effective legal care to ensure their rights and well-being are protected.
Prior to law school, Alex earned her B.A. in archaeology and classical studies from the University of Evansville, where she was an Honors Program scholar, a member of the Chi Omega sorority, a Purple Aces cheerleader, and a presenter at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research. As graduation approached, however, she began to feel a disharmony between her studies of people from the past and her desire to help people in the present. This ultimately drove her to pivot from a career in archaeology to law school.
Alex went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where her passion for helping families bloomed. While there, she received an award for clinical excellence for her work as a domestic relations mediator at the Viola J. Taliaferro Family and Children Mediation Clinic, where she provided pro bono assistance for indigent and low-income community members in family law matters, as well as provided resources, support, and trauma-informed care for clients around such issues as domestic violence and mental illness. After graduation, Alex was invited back to the clinic to serve as a mentor for clinical students.
From there, Alex gained years of invaluable courtroom experience specializing in child support matters, an experience that underscored her desire to advocate for those in need. Many people she worked with faced the same systemic barriers that her clinical clients faced; she witnessed firsthand how pending disability claims, houselessness, and the court system can suppress already vulnerable individuals. These experiences drove her back to the world of mediation, where she believed that facilitating peaceful resolutions could prevent further harm to those already struggling. This dedication ultimately led her to Lopez Law Office, P.C., where she now combines her extensive courtroom and mediation experience to provide empathetic, tailored legal support to the LGBTQ+ community and other marginalized groups.
Alex views legal aid as a form of community care, and community care is at the heart of her work. She strives to practice law through a trauma-informed and social justice-oriented lens, where the client’s autonomy comes first and the unique intersections of their identity are treated with dignity and respect.
